Surround Yourself with Smart People
Last Thursday night, the Saint John business community came together to celebrate entrepreneurship, big hearts, champions, and the amazing people we have in our community at the 31st Annual Outstanding Business Achievement. (I was honoured to be a finalist for an OBA. Congratulations to Fundy Sports and Tourism who won the category.)
When I looked around the room, I was amazed by the courage and accomplishments of the people there and of the teams they represent. Smart, forward-thinking, innovative, generous, and competitive experts running technology firms, restaurants, consultants, retail owners, and more.
Being in business is tough. It’s amazingly hard work that successful people do with the help of smart and focused people. Whether you own a business, work in a nonprofit, or are a stay-at-home parent, ask yourself a very important question about your life:
Who are you spending your time with?
Are these people smart?
Are they good-hearted?
Are they positive people?
Are they honest?
Do you have a mentor to help you with challenges?
Do you feel energized when you are with them?
Or do they suck the energy out of you?
It is okay to make new friends or business contacts. It is okay to spend less or not time with colleagues or friends that you have outgrown. It is okay to release a client or chose not to work with that organization again. It is okay to ask someone who knows more to advise you or help you.
Surround yourself with people who are smart and funny and wise. That’s how you become more successful at whatever you do all day.
