3 Simple Ways to Ensure People Will Read Your Email

Email is a tool that you either love or hate. But either way, it isn’t going away any time soon. In fact, studies show we spend 17 hours per week reading or sending email at work.

You need to make sure your emails are being read so you have the info you need to be productive at work.

Here are some reasons why your email message could be getting ignored.

1           Crying Wolf… or rather Crying Urgent

Marking your email messages URGENT when they are not is a fast way to lose respect in the workplace and ensure your messages are less likely to be read. And when you truly do have an emergency, like the boy who cried Wolf, your requests for help may go unread. Only use URGENT when you truly need a speedy reply.

2          Skipping the Subject

This is your best chance of getting your message read. Most people scan through their emails to decide if and when they’ll read them. Don’t be vague. “Report attached” Use a specific subject line. “Strategic Plan for feedback by June 30”

3          Burying the Lead

The first sentence of your email should tell the reader what you need and when. More and more people are checking email on cell phones or tablets. 61% of email opens occurred on mobile, 15% on desktop and 24% in a webmail client. – Adestra That means you have less space to get to your point, so use that space wisely.
